Assessing the Integration of Electricity Markets using Principal Component Analysis: Network and Market Structure Effects∗

چکیده
The major difficulties in assessing market power in electricity wholesale spot markets mean that great weight should be placed upon assessing market outcomes against the fundamental determinants of supply, demand and competition. In this spirit we study whether the New Zealand market has been a national market or a set of local markets since its inception in 1996. Electricity markets generally have loop flows that require simultaneous assessment of prices at all nodes, thereby limiting the informativeness of pair-wise nodal comparisons. We introduce principal component analysis to this application and show that it is a natural tool for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the presence of local markets. We find that increased competition induced some separation into local markets that was eliminated by transmission enhancement and the introduction of generation downstream from the constrained circuits. For most of the period New Zealand has had one national market. JEL Classification code: D4, L1, L4

Application of an Improved Neural Network Using Cuckoo Search Algorithm in Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting under Competitive Power Markets
Accurate and effective electricity price forecasting is critical to market participants in order to make an appropriate risk management in competitive electricity markets. Market participants rely on price forecasts to decide on their bidding strategies, allocate assets and plan facility investments. However, due to its time variant behavior and non-linear and non-stationary nature, electricity...

With the large-scale production of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), a new entity, the PEV fleet aggregator manages charging and discharging processes of the vehicles. The main objective of an individual aggregator in interaction with electricity markets is maximizing its profit. In this paper, the performance of this aggregator in day-ahead and real-time electricity markets, considering (a) cu...

The benefits of wind power generation have led to an ever-increasing expansion of wind farms around the world. The low cost of production and the environmental benefits of wind farms are some of the main reasons for using wind energy. On the other hand, uncertainty costs in the production and control of the output of wind turbines are among the problems that are being encountered for electricit...
